Treating leg cramp, shin splints, vitality/energy, frozen shoulder with Bowen

Bowen at a glance

The Bowen technique is a dynamic system of hands-on bodywork, which addresses both acute and chronic health problems as well as specific injuries. Through precise and gentle moves, Bowenwork encourages the body to relax and rebalance itself. In turn this catalyzes the release of old patterns of pain and tension held throughout the body, thus restoring the body to a state of wellness. The gentleness of this profoundly powerful technique makes it safe to use on anyone from newborns to the elderly. Developed by the late Tom Bowen in Australia, Bowen has been used successfully to treat people suffering from a variety of illnesses for more than 40 years.

It all starts with balance

When the body experiences stress, trauma or shock, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) gets triggered into a “fight or flight” response. The ANS is the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors. Once  “fight or flight” mode is no longer needed, the body often remains stuck in this stress response, inhibiting the body from being able to completely rest and relax. In such an imbalanced state, the neuromuscular functions are compromised leading to symptoms such as pain, illness and disease. It is believed that through the various sequences of Bowen moves, the ANS is encouraged to become rebalanced or reset at a cellular level, allowing the body to let go of held patterns of tension and pain. Healing can occur after the ANS shifts from “fight or flight” mode to “rest, relax and repair’ mode”. Bowen seems to catalyze or encourage that shift, allowing the body to then gradually recognize and restore its self-regulating functions using its own resources to heal itself. This in turn stabilizes its metabolism and neuromuscular functions.

What you can expect from

A Bowenwork session

During

Clients can either lie on a massage table or be seated in a chair if required for comfort. A series of gentle moves are applied to areas of the body rich in sensory receptors (muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves), stimulating physiological changes and energy flow. These moves can be done on the skin or through light, loose clothing if the client prefers. Important brief pauses between each series of moves are needed throughout the session, to give the body time to integrate this sensory information and benefit from the moves. A session can last from 30 minutes to 45 minutes and frequently results in a deep sense of relaxation. The session is most effective when only the minimum number of moves needed to bring about a healing response in the body are done.

After

Following a session, many clients report feeling light, refreshed and energized. Movement is often freer and pain is often relieved or reduced. For up to five days after a treatment the body may continue to heal itself, tweaking and adjusting as needed, even during sleep. Each person will respond differently, healing at a pace their body is able to. Occasionally, people feel sore or "washed out" or they may feel they have had a real work-out. Often a treatment results in increased calmness, improved posture, pain and symptom reduction, as well as many other benefits. Other manipulative or energetic therapies performed four days before and up to five days after a Bowen session may interfere with its effectiveness, so it is best to not have any other therapy during this time period. The Bowen technique does not interfere with the effectiveness of other disciplines. It is considered a complementary therapy, meaning it will enhance and complement, not interfere with other medical attention.
